What a Pantyhose Pack Has to Tell the Shopper

Sheer hosiery is usually chosen from the package alone. The shopper cannot try the pair on and rarely opens the pack in store, so four facts have to be readable at a glance: the size, the shade, the denier and the style (sheer to waist, control top, reinforced or sandal toe). A pack that hides any of these sends shoppers to the next brand on the peg.

That makes pantyhose packaging an information job first and a structure job second. The pair weighs very little and folds flat, so the board choice is mostly about print accuracy and peg strength rather than protection.

Pack Footprints for a Single Sheer Pair

A sheer pair folds into a flat panel. The sizes below are typical planning sizes built around that fold; we finalize them from a folded sample, because denier, waistband depth and gusset style all change the bulk.

Printing a Size Chart That Matches Your Hosiery

Letter sizes are not shared between makers. Size B on one chart covers a different height and weight band from size B on another, so a chart copied from somebody else's pack can send shoppers to the wrong pair. Two published letter charts, shown only to illustrate the gap:

Metric charts follow the same logic with different bands; one example lists S-M at 150 to 168 cm and 40 to 65 kg, and L-XL at 160 to 178 cm and 50 to 75 kg. Build your printed chart from your own pattern grading, and test it on real wearers before it goes to press.

• Lay the chart out as a grid with height on one axis and weight on the other, so each size is a block the shopper can find.
• Add a line telling shoppers that when height and weight fall in different sizes, the larger size is the one to choose. Many hosiery charts carry that instruction.
• Print the size letter large on the front panel as well, in the same position on every pack.
• Keep size charts as fit guidance only. Graduated or medical-style compression is regulated and should not be implied by pack copy.

Pack Formats for Sheer Hosiery

Flat Envelope Sleeve

A printed paperboard sleeve slides over the folded pair and its card stiffener. It is slim, stacks well in a drawer-style display and puts the full front panel to work for shade photography.

Egg-Style Pillow Pack

The pair is gathered into a compact bundle and closed inside an oval or curved pillow carton. It stands out on a shelf because it is not flat, suits impulse and gift positions, and uses very little board.

Three-Panel Folder

A one-piece paperboard folder wraps around the pair with front, back and inner panels. A hook cutout in the top lets it hang on a pin display without a separate header card.

Header Card and Poly Sleeve

The everyday drugstore format. The card carries brand, size and shade; the clear sleeve lets the knit show. Use a stiffer card than a carton so it does not curl on a long peg.

Tuck Carton with Window, or Tray with Sleeve

A tuck carton encloses the pair for boxed retail and gift packs. A small die-cut window over the leg panel shows the true shade. A tray with an outer sleeve gives a two-part pack that opens cleanly and suits multi-pair sets.

Shade and Denier Readouts

Nude and neutral shades sit close together, and small color shifts on press can make two shades look identical. Ask for a printed shade proof against the actual hose before approving the run. Where print accuracy matters most, a window showing the real knit removes the guesswork.

Put the denier number in the same corner of every pack, top right on the front panel is common, and print it large enough to compare across a peg row. Style callouts such as control top or sandal toe belong right beside it.

Board and Material Options

• SBS paperboard, roughly 14 to 24 pt (300 to 400 gsm C1S): bright white for accurate shade swatches and leg photography.
• Kraft board, 300 to 400 gsm: a natural look with one- or two-color print at lower print cost.
• Recycled-content board: an earthy face for brands that want it; recyclability depends on coatings and any film.
• Header card stock: a stiffer caliper than the carton so the hang hole does not tear.

Keeping the Pack Snag-Free

Fine knit catches on anything sharp. Specify clean die-cut window edges with film fully covering the opening, keep staples on the card well above the bag seal and away from the hose, and avoid rough uncoated inner panels where the pair rubs. A smooth card stiffener inside the fold stops the pair creasing at the edges.

Hang Options

• Euro slot: fits standard retail pegs and spreads load across the card.
• Round hang hole: suits clip strips and spinner racks.
• Hook cutout: built into a three-panel folder for pin displays.

Mistakes to Avoid With Pantyhose Packs

• Copying another maker's letter chart. Your grading is yours; print your own bands.
• Approving shade swatches on screen. Proof the printed swatch against real hose.
• Sharp window edges. They snag the knit as the pair goes in or comes out.
• No fitting guidance on the back panel. A short note on easing the heel and toe into place helps first-time buyers.
• One carton depth for every style. Control-top pairs can need more depth than sheer-to-waist pairs.

Minimum Order and Production
