Perfume Boxes Start With the Bottle, Not the Volume

Two perfume bottles can hold the same 100 ml and still need boxes more than 20 mm apart in height. One stock square crimp-neck bottle measures 59.2 x 59.2 x 77.8 mm. A slim stock bottle of the same volume measures 45 x 45 x 100 mm. A carton cut for the first will crush the cap of the second, and a carton cut for the second lets the first slide around.

So we quote custom perfume boxes from a measured bottle. Three numbers matter: width, depth and height with the sprayer and cap fitted. The insert you pick and the board caliper then set the final inner size. The volume printed on the label tells us very little about the box.

Bottle Shape Families and Typical Planning Sizes

Most fragrance bottles fall into a handful of shape families. The table lists measured stock bottles from glass suppliers and the inner carton size we would plan from each one. Planning sizes add about 2 mm per side and 4 mm of headspace above the cap, before any insert wall.

These are typical planning sizes for comparison. Exact dimensions are set to your bottle at quoting, once the insert material and board are chosen, because a 3 mm foam wall or a 2 mm rigid board changes both the inner and outer size.

Clearance Math: How Tight a Perfume Box Should Fit

Measure the bottle at its widest point. On many perfumes that is the cap, the collar or the crimp ring, not the glass body. A carton sized to the body alone can look right on paper and then refuse to close.

• Width and depth: bottle plus 1-2 mm per side for a sleeve-fit carton with no insert.
• Insert wall: add about 1.5-3 mm per side for EVA foam, or about 1-2 mm for a paperboard cradle.
• Height: bottle with cap and sprayer fitted, plus 3-6 mm so the tuck flap closes without pressing on the cap.
• Rigid boxes: add the wrapped chipboard thickness on each wall; once a lid sits over a base, that is roughly two board thicknesses per side.

Glass also varies a little between production lots, even within one volume from one supplier. Foam cut to the nominal size with zero tolerance can pinch the next delivery of bottles, so we leave a small working margin in every cavity.

Box Styles for Perfume Bottles

Fragrance packaging splits into folded cartons that ship flat and rigid boxes that arrive set up. Each style suits a different bottle weight and a different moment of opening.

• Tuck-end folding carton: straight or reverse tuck on SBS board. Light, flat-shipped and quick to fill, it fits most 30 ml and 50 ml retail lines.
• Two-piece rigid box: a lift-off lid over a base on wrapped chipboard, often used for a flagship 100 ml bottle.
• Magnetic-closure rigid box: a hinged lid held by a hidden magnet; buyers tend to keep it after the bottle is used.
• Drawer box: a tray that slides out of a printed sleeve, used when the reveal of the bottle is part of the story.

Board Choice by Bottle Weight

Heavier glass needs a stiffer carton, but extra stiffness costs weight, storage space and freight. Match the board to the bottle you actually ship.

• 16-18 pt SBS (about 0.41-0.46 mm): 30 ml and 50 ml bottles in lighter glass. Prints clean full color and folds crisply.
• 24 pt SBS (about 0.61 mm): heavier 100 ml glass in a folding carton. The stiffer panels bow less on a tall front face.
• 1800-2000 gsm rigid chipboard: a flagship 100 ml bottle or a gift set. It ships set up, so it takes more warehouse space than a flat carton.
• Wrap paper on rigid boxes: printed art paper or SBS. Foil and embossing read best on a smooth, coated wrap.

A 30 ml travel spray rarely needs a rigid box. The folded carton protects it on the shelf, and the money is better spent on a good cradle.

Inserts: Paperboard Cradle, EVA Foam or Molded Pulp

The insert is what holds the bottle still. Each material trades protection, print and cost differently.

• Paperboard cradle: light, printable and all-paper. It suits lighter bottles but cushions less than foam.
• EVA foam: firm, dense and cut to the exact bottle outline. It cannot be printed, so it is often covered in fabric, and it is plastic-based.
• Molded pulp: recycled fiber that follows the bottle closely. It needs a mold, so upfront tooling costs more, and print on it is limited.
• Fabric-wrapped platform: used in magnetic rigid gift boxes where the opened box is on display.

A round atomizer usually wants a circular cut so it cannot rotate, while a flat flacon can sit in a simple slot. A gift box holding a full bottle and a travel spray gets two cavities sized separately.

Discovery Sets and Sample Vial Packs

Discovery sets usually hold 3 to 12 vials of 2 ml or 5 ml. A 2 ml glass vial measures about 16 mm across and 42 mm tall, so the set size depends on how many holes you need and how far apart they sit.

• Printed card with die-cut holes: the vials stand in a row inside a slim sleeve. Leave enough board between holes that the card does not tear when a vial is pulled out.
• Molded tray: a pulp or formed tray with one pocket per vial, sized to the measured vial.
• Elastic loops in a rigid box: holds vials of slightly different diameters, useful when your sample glass comes from more than one supplier.

Print the scent names next to each hole so the set reads like a menu. A reverse panel can carry the full-size bottle offer.

Printing and Finishes on Perfume Cartons

Offset CMYK suits longer runs and photographic art. Digital print suits short runs and scent-by-scent artwork changes. Pantone brand colors can run alongside either.

Common finishes include hot foil, embossing or debossing, spot UV over matte lamination, and soft-touch lamination. All are optional. Mistakes to Avoid When Sizing a Perfume Box

• Sizing by milliliters: two 100 ml bottles can be 22 mm apart in height. Measure the bottle.
• Measuring the body, not the cap: the collar or cap is often the widest point.
• Forgetting the sprayer: pump and actuator height belong in the measurement.
• Zero-tolerance foam: glass varies between lots, so leave a working margin.
• Foil on uncoated board: fine detail may break up; test or switch stock.
• Rigid boxes for travel sizes: the weight and storage cost rarely pay back on a 30 ml spray.
• Assuming a laminated magnetic rigid box recycles like plain board: the wrap, lamination and magnet complicate disposal, so confirm what you plan to print about it.

Shipping Notes for Alcohol-Based Fragrance

The carton is secondary packaging; the sealed bottle holds the product. Alcohol-based fragrances can carry carrier and transport restrictions, so check current rules with your carrier before planning air or international shipments. MOQ starts from 100 on standard tuck-end sizes. Rigid builds, custom-cut EVA, molded pulp trays (which need tooling) and discovery-set inserts can push the floor higher. To quote, send the bottle width, depth and height with the cap fitted, the bottle weight, how many items go in each box, your insert choice, board, finishes and quantity. Reorders on locked artwork may reduce proofing time because the structure and artwork are already approved, but standard production remains 10–14 business days after artwork approval unless otherwise confirmed.
