What a Seed Packet Actually Has to Do

A seed packet is a flat paper envelope, sealed on the sides and closed at the top after filling. It has three jobs: keep the seed from spilling, slow down the moisture and light that age stored seed, and give the grower enough printed information to sow it correctly.

Those jobs pull in different directions. A fully sealed foil packet protects seed best but costs more and is harder to recycle. A plain kraft envelope looks right for a farmers market or a wedding table but offers little barrier. Most programs land somewhere between, and the choice depends on how long the seed will sit between packing and sowing.

Seed Packet Planning Sizes

Packets are measured flat and closed, width first. The sizes below are customary trade sizes and typical planning sizes; the exact dimensions are set to your seed and fill method when we quote. A seed envelope is not filled to the top, so leave headroom above the seed for the seal or fold.

A patent describing the standard seed envelope puts it at roughly 8 x 12 cm, which sits inside the 3 x 4.5 to 3.5 x 5 in band above. That band fits most retail seed racks. Larger formats, including gusseted pouches for bulk seed, are built to the fill volume rather than chosen from a list.

Why Seed Volume Matters More Than Seed Count

Seed counts vary hugely by species, so a packet sized by count alone can end up overfilled with beans or half empty with lettuce. Pack by weight or by count, print that figure on the label, and size the envelope around the volume of seed it holds. Large, heavy seed also stresses the bottom seam, so the paper weight and glue line need to suit the seed, not just the artwork.

Paper, Kraft, or Foil-Lined: Choosing the Packet Stock

The stock decision comes down to how long the seed sits and in what conditions. Humidity is the main enemy of stored seed, and moisture inside the packet does more damage than warmth alone. A common seed-saver rule of thumb is to keep storage temperature in degrees F plus relative humidity under 100.

The trade-off is straightforward. Foil and laminate slow moisture far better than paper, but a mixed-material packet is harder to recycle and narrows any environmental claim you can make. Plain paper is simpler to recycle locally, depending on inks, adhesives, and local rules, and is the sensible pick when seed will be sown within months. No packet replaces good drying: seed should be completely dry before it goes in, and seed savers commonly let cleaned seed rest about a week in a dry place first.

Closures, Windows, and Fill Methods

• Glued top flap: the classic fold-over closure for hand-filled packets. Simple and low cost; not resealable.
• Self-adhesive reseal strip: lets a gardener use part of the packet and close it again. Useful for mixed beds and succession sowing.
• Overlapping fold: an inner flap tucks under the outer one so fine seed cannot work out through the corners.
• Heat seal: foil-lined packets are closed with heat, often a simple iron or impulse sealer for small runs.
• Window: a polypropylene film window shows the seed. It also lets light in, so it suits seed that will sell through quickly.

What to Print on a Seed Packet

A seed packet has very little space, so the panel plan matters more than the artwork. The front sells the variety; the back tells the grower what to do.

• Front: variety name, crop type, brand, and an illustration or photo.
• Back: sowing depth, spacing, days to maturity or bloom, sun needs, and a packed-for or sow-by year.
• Net contents: weight or count, matching how you actually pack.
• Seller details: name and address of the packer or shipper.

Retail seed sold across US state lines falls under the Federal Seed Act labeling rules, which cover items such as kind and variety, test results from your own seed lot, any seed treatment, and the shipper's name and address. Only print test figures you have a lab record for, and confirm current requirements with your state seed regulator. Wedding and promotional packets may fall under different rules, so check before printing.

Printing Methods

Digital printing suits short runs and variable data, such as a different variety on each batch or a couple's names on wedding favors. Offset suits longer runs where many varieties share one template and color must stay consistent across the line. On kraft, a white underprint or a spot color keeps photos and small type readable. • No year panel: buyers look for a packed-for or sow-by year; leave a spot for it, even on favors.
• Full-bleed photos on kraft: photos print dull on brown stock without a white underprint.
