Bagel Boxes Are Sized by Stack Math

Bagels are round, dense and fairly uniform, which makes box sizing a matter of arithmetic. Three numbers decide the box: ring diameter, ring thickness and count. Get those right and the bagels sit snug without rolling or pressing into each other.

Most bagels fall between about 3.5 in for minis and 5 in for large New York-style rings, with a frozen New York-style bagel listed at 4.5 to 5 in and about 4.5 oz. Thickness varies more by recipe, so we treat around 1.5 to 1.75 in as a working figure and confirm it against your own bake.

Flat or Stacked

One flat layer keeps toppings like seeds and salt on the bagel and lets a window show every flavour. Two layers save counter space and fit a car seat better. If you stack, a parchment sheet between layers keeps the top row clean.

Room for Spread Tubs

Many bagel orders go out with one or two tubs of spread. A common 8 oz deli tub runs about 4.5 in across and 1.5 in tall. Two ways to fit it:

• End bay: extend the box by about 5 in and add a fold-in divider, so tubs sit in their own square at one end.
• Side pocket: a separate tuck pocket on the outside of the box holds a tub and knives without touching the bagels.

Tell us the tub size you use, since container sizes vary by supplier. Keeping tubs out of the bagel area also stops a cold tub from sweating onto warm bread, and it means a split lid does not ruin the whole order.

For larger catering orders, two or three tubs often travel with a dozen. In that case a separate small carton for spreads and cutlery, matched to the bagel box artwork, is usually simpler than one oversized box with several bays.

Dry, Buttered or Catered: Matching the Interior

How bagels go into the box matters more for the board than the count does. A dry half-dozen carried a short way usually runs well on uncoated board. Toasted, buttered or schmeared bagels can move oil into plain board, and a coated interior or a paper liner can help manage that. Results vary with the spread, the coating and how long the box stays closed.

Catered platters are a third case. They sit open on a table for an hour or more, so a stiff, flat base matters more than a coating. Choose the interior per product instead of coating every box by default.

Windows and Grease Control Are Separate Decisions

A window sells plain bagels in a grab-and-go case: customers see the flavours before they buy. Grease control protects the board when bagels are dressed. The two answer different questions. A retail half-dozen may want a window and no coating; a toasted catering order may want a coated base and no window at all.

If a box carries both, keep the film clear of any spread, and check the case lighting and the angle customers see before you fix the window position.

Board and Carry Weight

A half-dozen weighs under 2 lb; a baker's dozen weighs nearly twice that. Board should step up with the count:

• 16 to 18pt SBS or kraft (0.016 to 0.018 in): singles, pairs and six-count boxes.
• 18 to 24pt (0.018 to 0.024 in) or E-flute (about 0.04 to 0.06 in): dozen and baker's dozen boxes, especially with a handle.
• E-flute trays: large platters that are carried flat by two hands.

Closures for a Fast Morning Counter

Lock-corner trays with a hinged lid fold flat and open wide, so staff can drop bagels in from above. Auto-bottom cartons pop open in one motion when the line is long. Gable-style boxes with a top handle suit dozens carried by one hand. Pick the closure your staff can build fastest at the rush, since that is when most boxes get folded.

Print Methods for Bagel Boxes

Flexographic print in one or two colours on kraft is the low-setup route for shop logos. For full-colour artwork on corrugated, litho-lamination mounts a printed sheet onto the fluted board. SBS paperboard takes offset printing directly, which suits chains that want the same artwork at every location. Spot UV or embossing on the logo are optional extras.

Mixed boxes often need flavour labels. A row of tick boxes printed on the lid, or a blank label panel, lets staff mark sesame, everything or plain without separate stickers.

Mistakes to Avoid When Ordering Bagel Boxes

• Sizing to a generic bagel: your diameter and thickness set the box. Measure a few from a normal bake.
• No plan for buttered orders: toasted or dressed bagels can mark plain board. Decide on a liner or coating for those products.
• One box for every count: a half-dozen slides in a dozen box. Keep separate sizes for your main counts.
• A window placed without checking the counter: film only helps if customers see it from where they stand.
• Coating every box by default: dry bagels may not need it. Match the interior to how each order goes in.
• Locking artwork before the interior is agreed: confirm any liner or coating that touches the bagels before the proof is approved.

Minimum Order and Production

MOQ starts from 100 boxes on standard sizes such as six-count and dozen boxes. Tub dividers, side pockets and litho-laminated builds can raise the floor, which is confirmed at quoting along with pricing for your quantity.

Reorders on locked artwork may reduce proofing time because the structure and artwork are already approved, but standard production remains 10–14 business days after artwork approval unless otherwise confirmed.
