A Tube Is Sized From the Jar, Not From the Ounce Label

A black paper candle tube is a rigid cylinder of wound paperboard with a lid on top and a closed base. It holds a finished container candle, such as a glass tumbler, a canning-style jar, or a tin, for retail display and gifting. The jar is the product; the tube is the outer pack and the printed surface.

The size question trips up more buyers than anything else. Candles are sold as 8 oz or 12 oz, but that figure can mean wax weight or vessel capacity, and it varies by supplier. Two candles both labeled 8 oz can differ in diameter and height. A tube is built from three measurements of the actual jar: its widest outside diameter, its height with the lid on, and anything else that adds width, such as a thick label or a heavy glass base.

The planning rule is simple: tube inside diameter equals the jar's widest outside diameter, lid and label included, plus about 0.1 to 0.25 in (roughly 3 to 6 mm) of clearance. Less than that and the jar binds; much more and it rattles. Inner height equals jar height with lid on, plus any base disc, plus a small allowance so the lid seats fully.

Reference Tube Footprints Seen in Candle Supply

Two stock tube sizes show up across candle supply ranges and are useful benchmarks:

• About 3.25 in inside diameter by about 4.4 in tall: takes straight-sided tumblers up to roughly 3.2 in across. It will not take a 4.75 in canning-style jar standing up, and wide heavy-base tumblers are usually excluded.
• About 3.7 in inside diameter by 5 in tall: takes wider ceramic and glass tumblers, with room for a centering ring on narrower jars.

If your jar sits close to either footprint but not inside it, a custom diameter on a new run removes the rattle problem rather than working around it with inserts.

Inserts That Stop the Jar Moving

A jar that moves inside its tube scuffs the black wall from inside and arrives looking handled. Three inserts fix this:

• Base disc: a paperboard disc in the bottom raises the jar so the lid meets the tube lid, closing any vertical gap.
• Centering ring: a die-cut paperboard or foam ring around the jar takes up diameter clearance, useful when one tube size serves two jar sizes.
• Top insert: a disc under the lid stops the jar lifting and gives a clean spot for a printed note or warning panel.

Pick inserts after you have the jar in hand. A ring cut for a 3.0 in jar will not hold a 3.24 in tumbler.

Black Finish: What Shows and What Hides

The tube wall is wound from layers of paperboard, and the black look comes from either a printed black wrap paper or a black-dyed outer ply. Both read the same on the shelf, but black surfaces show fingerprints, rub marks, and scuffs more than kraft or white do.

• Matte lamination gives an even, low-glare black and resists rubbing.
• Soft-touch lamination adds a velvety feel and hides light handling marks, at a higher unit cost.
• Uncoated black paper looks rich but marks easily; ask for a rub test sample before committing a full run.

Regular CMYK ink disappears on black, so artwork is applied on top of the color:

• Foil stamping in gold, silver, copper, or a colored foil for logos and scent names.
• Opaque white ink for small type, ingredient lists, and warning text.
• Spot UV for a gloss-on-matte logo that shows up when light catches it.
• Embossing or debossing for a mark you can feel through the wrap.

Lids, Bases, and Closure Options

• Push-fit paper lid with lip: the standard closure. Friction holds it in place; fit is tuned so it lifts off cleanly without falling off in hand.
• Telescoping two-piece tube: a lid that slides well down over the base, giving a longer overlap and a firmer feel.
• Metal end caps: pressed metal ends for a crisp rim and extra end stiffness, at a higher unit cost.
• Fixed paperboard base: glued in at the bottom, so only the lid opens.

Where the Warning and Burn Copy Goes

On a boxed candle, outer packaging is an accepted place for safety copy, and many brands repeat it on the jar's base label. On a tube, the common spots are the side wall as a printed panel, the top insert under the lid, or a printed label on the base. Fire-safety wording usually follows ASTM F2058 guidance; confirm the requirements for your market. The tube carries the text; it does not change how the candle burns.
