Start With the Vessel, Not the Ounce Label

A candle label is a printed face stock with adhesive and a release liner, applied to the outside of a jar, tumbler, tin, or ceramic vessel. Getting the size right is the part most buyers get wrong. Candle sizes are sold as 8 oz or 12 oz, but that number may describe wax weight or vessel capacity, and two vessels with the same rating can differ in diameter. Labels are sized from the vessel itself: its diameter, the height of its straight wall, and any curve at the shoulder or base.

Measure with calipers or a flexible tape, then confirm by wrapping a strip of paper around the jar where the label will sit. Mark where it meets, cut it, and you have the circumference to plan around.

Wrap Label Width by Jar Diameter

For a full wrap, the label width is the circumference (pi x diameter) minus a seam gap, so the two ends do not overlap and lift. The gap is a design choice, not a fixed rule; the table uses 0.25 in (about 6 mm) as a planning figure. An overlap is also possible on film labels, but confirm it with us before artwork is set.

Label height is the straight-wall height minus clearance at top and bottom. Labels carried over a shoulder curve or a rounded base tend to wrinkle and lift, so keep the label on the flat section. Supplier wrap charts sometimes list widths larger than a jar's circumference, which only works on a wider jar than the one you have. Measure your actual jar; a published chart is a guide, not a fit.

Partial Wraps, Lid Rounds, and Warning Labels

Not every candle needs a full wrap. Many brands run a front panel and a separate back or base label, which costs less and leaves glass visible. Label suppliers publish recommended sizes for common vessels; the figures below are typical planning sizes from those charts, to be checked against your own vessel.

Warning labels are usually round. A 1 to 1.5 in round suits small jars and tins, 2 to 2.5 in suits standard jars, and 3 in or larger suits big multi-wick vessels. The base is the most common placement on container candles; a side panel works when the warning must be visible at the point of sale, and boxed candles often carry it on the outer pack too. Fire-safety wording usually follows ASTM F2058 guidance; confirm the requirements for your market. Keep warning text legible: type on a 1 in lid label gets very small very quickly.

Other Vessel Formats

Votives are short and narrow, so they usually take a small front label or a slim wrap rather than a full-height panel. Pillar candles have no vessel at all; the label sits on the wax, so a narrow wrap sized to the pillar's diameter, or a base label, is the usual choice. Taper candles carry a small label on the holder or base. Settle the vessel format first, because it closes off some stock options, particularly on tins and pillars.

Material Options for Candle Labels

The face stock decides the look and how well the label copes with humidity, handling, and fragrance oil on the glass. Paper is fine for candles that live in a dry room and sell quickly. Film suits bathrooms, kitchens, repeated handling, and long shelf life.

Film resists moisture better than paper, but no label is proof against everything. Performance still depends on the adhesive, the vessel surface, and how long the label stays wet.

Adhesive Options by Vessel

• Permanent acrylic: the usual choice for glass, tin, and glazed ceramic. Give it a short dwell time after application before packing.
• Removable adhesive: for vessels sold for reuse as storage or planters, so the customer can peel the label cleanly.
• Stronger permanent grades: for unglazed ceramic and tins, where the surface or temperature changes stress the label edge.

Apply to clean, dry, room-temperature vessels. Fragrance oil or wax residue on the glass weakens any adhesive, so wipe jars before labeling.

Printing and Finishing

Digital printing suits short runs, several scents on one order, and variable data such as batch numbers or scent-of-the-month names. Flexographic printing suits longer runs of a stable design where unit cost matters more. Screen-printed or digitally printed white ink is what makes clear BOPP readable on glass.

• Matte, gloss, or satin lamination: protects the print and helps paper labels resist curl.
• Foil stamping: gold, copper, silver, or colored foil on logos and scent names.
• Embossing: raised marks that work well on kraft and textured paper.
• Spot UV: gloss detail over a matte base.

A common layout puts the logo and scent name on the front panel, fragrance notes and net weight on the side, and burn instructions plus the warning on the base or back. Scent lines often keep one master design and change only the scent name and color band, which keeps reorders simple. Mistakes to Avoid With Candle Labels

• Ordering by ounce: size from the vessel's diameter and straight-wall height.
• Running the label over the shoulder: curves wrinkle and lift labels; keep to the straight wall.
• Leaving the seam undecided: choose a gap or an overlap before artwork, and keep text away from the seam.
• Paper in a humid room: use film or a laminated paper for bathroom and kitchen candles.
• Hiding the warning: a warning placed under a full wrap or on a pack the buyer throws away does not do its job.
• One die for tin and jar: the same scent in a tin and a jar usually needs two label sizes.
