Are Banker Boxes Recyclable? A Component-by-Component Recyclability Chart

A plain corrugated records carton is made of the material that paper mills recover most. Whether a particular carton gets recycled depends on what has been added to it: film, foil, wax, plastic ties, metal corners, stickers and tape. So the honest answer to "are banker boxes recyclable?" is a component list, not a yes or no.

The pattern: every component you add to the board is something a recycler has to separate. The fewer you add, the simpler the carton's end of life.

Recycled Content and Recyclability Are Two Different Numbers

Recycled content describes what went into the board. Recyclability describes what can happen to it afterwards. A carton can be high in recycled fibre and still be hard to recycle because it was laminated, or made of virgin fibre and recycle easily.

• There is no reliable industry average for records cartons. One major maker lists 60% recycled content, including 50% post-consumer, for its own storage box line. That is one maker's listed figure, not a norm.
• Ask for the figure on your order. If recycled content matters to your reporting, ask the supplier to state it for the board used and to provide chain-of-custody paperwork if your program requires it.
• Virgin and recycled liners behave differently. Virgin kraft liner keeps longer fibres, which helps strength for a given weight. Recycled fibre shortens a little each time it goes through the mill.

What the Recovery Figures Say

For corrugated as a whole, recovery is high, but the figure depends on who is counting and how.

• The American Forest & Paper Association reported an OCC recycling rate of 93.6% for 2022, up from 91.4% in 2021, with about 34 million tons recovered.
• Of that tonnage, about 18 million tons went back into new containerboard.
• An independent estimate using a different method put the 2022 rate far lower, at about 67%. The gap comes from how each method counts boxes that enter and leave the market.
• The Fibre Box Association states that corrugated fibre can be recycled at least seven more times.

These are industry-wide figures for corrugated, not a promise about any single carton. They do show that a clean, unlaminated records carton is going into a stream that works.

Treated Board: How the Repulpability Standard Works

Records cartons rarely need wax, but some moisture-resistant boards are treated. The Fibre Box Association's 2025 voluntary standard sets the test for whether treated corrugated can be counted as recyclable:

• The pulper test runs at least 20% treated board with untreated board making up the rest.
• Fibre yield must be at least 60%, and rejects no more than 20%.
• Board that passes in a certified lab can carry the "Corrugated Recycles" mark.
• The standard does not address tape or labels, and it excludes boxes contaminated with hazardous or medical material.

If a treated board has not been through this kind of test, do not describe the carton as recyclable.

Box Styles and Construction Options That Recycle Cleanly

• Lift-off lid cartons: base and lid are the same board, so both go into one bin.
• Tape-free fold-up cartons: interlocking flaps replace tape, which removes the most common plastic contaminant.
• One-colour flexo print: enough for a logo, a number and a label panel, with no film.
• Printed label panel: a blank printed area for marker writing does the job of a sticker without the adhesive.
• Archival styles: buffered archival corrugated is still paper fibre. Only metal edges or ties need to come off first.

Reuse Before Recycling

Records cartons are built to be handled many times, so reuse often comes first. Texas's state library records program accepts reused cartons as long as one end and one side are clear of old markings. The same program asks for box numbers and details written directly on the carton in waterproof marker rather than on stick-on labels.

Confidential records are different. Cartons sent for secure shredding usually go into a separate destruction stream with their contents rather than into curbside OCC collection.

Mistakes to Avoid When Making Recycling Claims

• Treating recycled content as proof of recyclability. They measure different things.
• Laminating the carton, then printing a recycling message on it. Film can stop a carton from being accepted at some mills.
• Leaving ties, metal edges and stickers on. Each one is a separation job for the recycler.
• Recycling wet or contaminated cartons. Water-damaged or soiled board is often rejected at sorting.
• Using absolute words. Claims like "fully recyclable" or "zero waste" cannot be backed for every local system. State what the carton is made of and let local rules decide the rest.
