What Makes a Belly Band Different

A belly band is a strip, not a cover. It runs around the middle of an item and leaves most of the faces showing, which is why stationers, publishers and small-batch makers use it where a full sleeve or box would hide the product.

Three things set a band apart from a sleeve. It is narrow, usually 1 to 4 in. It is closed by hand around the item, with a sticker, glue dot or pre-applied glue strip, rather than glued into a tube at the factory. Band Width: How Much to Cover

Width is a design decision, but it follows what the band has to carry.

• 1 to 1.5 in: a monogram, name or single line of type. Common on invitation suites.
• About 2 to 2.5 in: a logo plus a product name. One supplier's standard width of 55 mm (about 2.2 in) sits here.
• 3 to 4 in: room for a barcode, short copy or an illustration. A 100 mm band is about 3.9 in.

As a rough guide, keep the band well under half the height of the face it crosses, or it starts to read as a sleeve.

Band Length From the Item's Size

Length is arithmetic. For a flat or boxy item, the band crosses the front and back and wraps both edges, so:

Band length = 2 x item width + 2 x item thickness + overlap

For a round item, use the diameter multiplied by pi, then add the overlap. Always measure the assembled stack, not one piece.

A set of very thin pieces slides apart inside a band cut to the exact size, so allow an extra 3 to 5 mm (about 1/8 to 3/16 in) when the stack has many loose sheets.

Overlap and Closure Choices

The overlap is where the band closes, and how much you need depends on the closure.

• Sticker or glue dot: the band loops past itself and is fixed by hand. Allow at least 1 in (about 25 mm) so the closure has room to land straight.
• Pre-glued strip: a narrow strip of adhesive under a release liner. A 0.25 in (6 mm) glue area is common, and the band is sized to finish with only that overlap.
• Tuck slot: a die-cut tab locks into a slot, so the overlap is built into the dieline rather than added as flat paper.
• Twine, ribbon or wax seal: decorative closures that need a slightly longer overlap so the seal sits flat.

Every band file also needs 1/8 in of bleed beyond the trim on all sides, so the print runs off the edge cleanly.

Paper Options for Bands

Weight decides whether the band drapes around a stack or holds a crisp shape.

• 80 lb text (about 120 gsm, roughly 0.006 in): bends around invitation suites without creasing and folds into a mailing envelope.
• 100 lb text (about 150-170 gsm): a little firmer, still easy to wrap by hand.
• 80-100 lb cover (roughly 215-270 gsm): holds a defined edge on notebooks and boxed sets.
• 14 pt board (about 300 gsm, 0.014 in): stiff, for bands around rigid items that should keep sharp corners.
• Kraft and translucent vellum: a natural brown look, or a layered effect where the item shows through.

Printing and Finishing

Digital print suits short runs and events where every order carries a different name or date. Offset suits repeat artwork in larger quantities. Bands can print on both sides, which is useful when the inside face shows once the band is slipped off.

Applying Bands by Hand

Bands arrive flat, cut to length and stacked, with any scores already pressed in. Most are fitted by hand, so a few habits keep a batch looking even.

• Square the stack first: tap loose pieces level before wrapping, or the band sits crooked on the shortest piece.
• Put the closure on the back: the overlap and sticker sit behind the item, so the printed front stays clean.
• Use a simple jig: a strip of tape on the bench marking where the band should sit keeps the height the same on every unit.
• Peel liners as you go: on pre-glued bands, remove the release liner only when the band is in place, so the adhesive stays clean.

A band slides off without damaging the item, so the product underneath stays clean and unmarked once the band is removed.

Mistakes to Avoid With Belly Bands

• Measuring width only: stack thickness counts twice in the length, and a thick set will not close.
• Too little overlap: under about 1 in, a sticker closure lands crooked or peels in transit.
• Artwork on the overlap: anything printed there is hidden under the closure.
• Board where paper is needed: a stiff band around a mailed invitation can crack at the fold or push the envelope out of shape.
• No scores on heavy stock: cover weights fold unevenly around corners without them.
