Learn More About Coffee Boxes
What Are Custom Coffee Boxes
Custom coffee packaging boxes are the printed cartons, mailers, and gift boxes that hold your sealed coffee product, present your brand, and protect it from the roastery to the shelf or doorstep. The box is secondary packaging. The sealed valve bag, the capsule, the drip-bag sachet, or the jar is what actually contacts the coffee and holds freshness. The box gives you a flat, printable surface for branding, a stable structure for retail and shipping, and a format that fits how you sell.
Because the box sits around a sealed unit, you have wide freedom in material and construction. That is why a single roaster can run a Kraft single-bag carton for retail, a corrugated mailer for a subscription, and a rigid two-piece box for a holiday gift set, all under one program.
Who Orders Custom Coffee Packaging Boxes
Specialty roasters: single-bag and multi-bag cartons that match a single-origin or blend lineup.
Cafes and coffee shops: retail boxes for whole-bean and ground bags sold at the counter.
Subscription coffee brands: mailer-style boxes built to survive carrier handling and arrive presentable.
Pod and capsule brands: count cartons with dividers that seat capsules in neat rows.
Drip bag and single-serve brands: slim multipacks for sachets and pour-over sets.
Private label and white-label suppliers: one structure printed across several client brands.
Gift and sampler programs: rigid or drawer boxes that seat several bags or pods with a card.
Wholesale and grocery distributors: sturdy retail cartons with barcode and labeling space.
Construction and Box Styles
Coffee boxes run across a folded tier for everyday retail, a corrugated tier for shipping, and a rigid tier for gifting. The right pick depends on weight, channel, and whether the box ships on its own.
Tuck-end folding carton: the retail workhorse for a single bag or a small bag count; ships flat and prints full color.
Auto-bottom carton: a folded carton with a locking base for heavier multi-bag or multi-pod loads.
Corrugated mailer: a shipper-grade box for subscriptions and direct-to-consumer orders that travel alone.
Two-piece rigid box: a lid-and-base gift box for sets, holiday packs, and upscale seasonal releases.
Drawer (matchbox) box: a sliding sleeve and tray that suits pod sets and sampler flights.
Sleeve and tray: a printed band around an inner tray, common for drip-bag and pour-over kits.
Pod display carton: a count box with paperboard dividers for capsules, with an optional shelf-ready front.
Pick the tier based on how the box reaches the buyer. A box that sits on a retail shelf and is bought in a tote can be a light, folded carton. A box that travels alone to a doorstep usually needs a corrugated structure rated for that trip. A box meant to be handed over as a gift earns the weight and finish of a rigid box. Many brands run two or three of these tiers at once across retail, subscription, and seasonal lines.
Materials and Substrate
Substrate follows the channel and the weight the box carries. We commonly build coffee boxes in three families:
Kraft board: a brown, natural-looking stock that fits roaster and organic positioning; takes 1–2 color flexographic printing well and shows lighter ink colors with a warm cast.
SBS / folding boxboard: a bright white coated board for full-color CMYK retail cartons where shade accuracy and a clean print surface matter.
Corrugated (E-flute and B-flute): a fluted board for mailers and shipper boxes where stacking and transit protection matter more than a glossy face.
Rigid chipboard: a thick, wrapped board for gift and presentation boxes that hold their shape and open with weight.
For sustainability-positioned brands, recycled-fiber options and materials options may be available depending on material, supplier, and documentation. Confirm what is available for your construction during quoting.
Sizing the Box to Bags, Pods, and Drip Bags
Coffee boxes are sized around what goes inside, not a single standard. A 12oz whole-bean bag has a filled footprint and a gusseted depth; a 2lb or 5lb bag runs much larger. Pods stack in counts of 10, 12, 20, or 30 and need a divider room. Drip bags and sachets are flat and slim and pack in multipacks.
Single-bag boxes: sized around the filled bag footprint plus clearance so the bag seats without crushing.
Multi-bag and sampler boxes: sized to seat two to four bags upright or flat with dividers.
Pod and capsule count boxes: sized to the capsule diameter and the row layout for the count.
Drip bag multipacks: slim cartons sized to the sachet stack height.
Send the filled bag or pod dimensions, the count per box, and whether bags sit upright or flat, and we size the carton around the real unit.
Print and Finishing Options
Printing depends on substrate and run size. Kraft suits 1–2 color flexographic printing for a clean roaster look; SBS and rigid wraps take full-color CMYK offset and digital for photography, gradients, and detailed origin maps.
Run size shapes the print method. Short and frequently changing runs, such as single-origin micro-lots that rotate often, suit digital printing because there are no plates to remake between designs. Longer, stable runs of a flagship blend suit offset for color consistency across large quantities. Tell us how many designs and how many units per design, and we will recommend the method that fits.
Finishing is optional and chosen to match the brand, not added by default. Common choices include matte or gloss lamination, soft-touch coating, foil stamping, embossing, debossing, spot UV, and aqueous coating. Use a finish where it earns its place; many roaster boxes ship clean on uncoated kraft. See finishing options for how each reads on coffee cartons.
Custom Coffee Boxes with Logo
Logo placement is the core of a retail coffee box. We print your logo, origin and roast callouts, flavor notes, grind type, weight, and barcode in the layout you supply. On kraft, a single-color or foil logo reads cleanly against the brown stock; on white SBS, full-color brand art and bean photography carry the shelf. Custom printed coffee boxes with logo also leave room for required labeling such as net weight, roast date area, and ingredient or origin lines. Plan the panel layout early: the front carries the brand and roast level, a side panel often holds the origin and tasting notes, and the back commonly holds the barcode, weight, and brewing guidance. Building this map before artwork keeps the retail face clean and the legal copy legible.
Coffee Box Inserts, Dividers, and Bag Fit
Inside the box, inserts keep the product from shifting and give the unbox a deliberate feel. The right insert depends on the format.
Paperboard dividers: seat pods or capsules in rows so they do not rattle or scatter in a count box.
Tray inserts: hold drip bags or sachets flat and stacked in a slim multipack.
Bag cradles and end stops: a folded paperboard form that keeps a whole-bean bag upright in a single-bag box.
Corrugated partitions: separate multiple bags in a sampler or subscription box so they do not press on one another.
If an inner component touches the coffee directly, that part should be appropriate for the intended food-contact application; confirm food-contact requirements during quoting. Most coffee programs keep the sealed bag, capsule, or sachet between the coffee and the carton, so the box itself stays a structural and branding layer.
The Box and Freshness: What It Does and Doesn't Do
The carton protects, presents, and organizes. It does not seal coffee or preserve aroma on its own. Freshness comes from the sealed bag with a one-way degassing valve, the capsule, or the sachet inside. Position the box as branding and structure, and let the inner sealed unit handle the barrier. If you need direct-contact inner components such as paperboard trays or liner sheets, those should be appropriate for the intended food-contact application; confirm food-contact requirements during quoting. We avoid blanket compliance claims and confirm material suitability per project.
MOQ, Lead Times, and Quoting
Minimum order quantity generally starts around 100 units, though it varies by construction; rigid and specialty builds may carry a different minimum than a simple folded carton. Standard production runs 10–14 business days after artwork approval. Specialty constructions may require additional review and setup. Reorders on locked artwork may reduce proofing time because the structure and artwork are already approved, but standard production remains 10–14 business days after artwork approval unless otherwise confirmed.
For an accurate quote, send your filled bag or pod dimensions, count per box, substrate preference, print colors, any finishing, and your target quantity. Explore related options, Mailer Boxes, and food boxes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Coffee Boxes are sized around the unit inside rather than a single standard. A 12oz whole-bean bag, a 2lb or 5lb bag, a pod count of 10 to 30, and a drip-bag multipack each call for a different footprint. Send the filled bag or pod dimensions, the count per box, and whether bags sit upright or flat, and we size the carton with clearance so the product seats without crushing.
