Length Comes First

A classic baguette is long and thin: around 55 to 65 cm (roughly 22 to 26 in) in length and about 5 to 6 cm (2 to 2.4 in) across, at around 250 g. Some bakeries go longer still. No other bread format puts so much length on so little width, and that shape drives every decision on a baguette box.

The box has three jobs. It has to cover the full loaf including the tapered tips, keep a narrow cross-section so the bread does not roll, and stay straight over two feet of span when someone carries it by the middle. Board choice, closure style and venting all follow from those three.

Typical Planning Sizes for Long Loaves

A simple rule works for most loaves: inner length equals the cooled loaf length plus about 1 in, and inner width and height equal the loaf diameter plus 0.5 to 0.75 in. The sizes below are typical planning sizes from that rule. Exact dimensions are confirmed against your own loaf at quoting.

Sleeve, Tube-Style Carton or Window Box

Open-Ended Sleeve

A printed band wraps the middle of the loaf and leaves both ends open. It uses the least board, lets steam escape from the open ends, and shows off the crust. It is the natural choice for same-day loaves handed across the counter.

Tube-Style Tuck-End Carton

A closed four-sided carton with tuck flaps at each end covers the full loaf, tips included. It protects bread on delivery runs and in shared bags. Vent slots near the ends let moisture out so a closed carton does not trap steam around a warm loaf.

Long Window Carton

A clear film strip running the length of the top panel shows the scoring and crust colour along the whole loaf. A long strip suits self-serve bread cases; a short window near one end suits a gift loaf where most of the panel carries print.

Multi-Loaf Shipper

Catering drops and wholesale bread runs often move five or ten loaves at once. A corrugated shipper with a divider keeps loaves parallel and stops them pressing into each other. Lay loaves side by side in one layer where possible, since a second layer presses on the crust of the first.

Board That Will Not Bow Over Two Feet

Length is hard on paperboard. A carton that feels firm at 10 in will sag at 27 in when carried by the middle. Pick the board by the construction and the span:

• 16 to 18pt kraft or SBS (0.016 to 0.018 in): sleeves, where the loaf itself supports the band.
• 18 to 24pt (0.018 to 0.024 in): closed full-length cartons, so the walls resist bowing along the length.
• E-flute corrugated (about 0.04 to 0.06 in): long cartons that travel in delivery bags or carry a handle.
• B-flute corrugated (about 0.10 to 0.13 in): multi-loaf shippers and catering cases.

Kraft gives an unbleached bakery look and takes one or two flexographic colours well. SBS gives a bright white face for full-colour artwork. Both are available in the calipers above. The packaging materials catalog lists the board options in more detail.

Vents, Windows and Carry Tabs

Fresh bread gives off moisture as it cools. A fully closed box around a warm loaf can soften the crust, so vent slots or open ends are worth planning for unfilled loaves. Filled loaves are different: there a closed carton and a parchment wrap inside matter more than airflow.

A die-cut carry tab or handle on top of a long carton makes it easier to take home, but a handle on thin board can tear or let the carton fold in the middle. If you want a handle, plan on 24pt board or E-flute, and keep the handle centred over the loaf's balance point.

How Long Boxes Ship and Stand

All baguette sleeves and cartons ship flat-folded in bundles, which keeps storage compact even at two feet long. Staff fold them at the bench as loaves cool. Allow shelf or rack space for the flat length, since a 27 in blank needs a longer shelf than most bakery stock.

In the shop, long cartons often stand on end in a bread basket or lie on a slanted rack. If yours will stand upright, place the logo and the bread name so they read vertically, and keep the window on the face that points out of the basket.

Printing and Finishes

A sleeve gives you one wraparound band, so artwork should repeat or read well from any side. Long cartons offer four panels and two end flaps: the end flap is a good spot for the bread name and bake date sticker. Flexographic print on kraft keeps setup low for one or two colours; offset on SBS handles full-colour designs. Mistakes to Avoid With Long-Format Bread Boxes

• Measuring at the bench: measure the cooled loaf, from tip to tip, rather than the shaped dough or a loaf straight from the oven.
• Ignoring the tapered ends: the tips are the first part to break. Leave the full inch of length clearance.
• No vent on a closed carton: warm, unfilled loaves need somewhere for moisture to go.
• A handle on thin board: the carton folds at the handle. Step up the caliper or move to E-flute.
• One size for demi and full loaves: a demi rolling inside a full-length box gets damaged. Keep two sizes.
• Locking the die before the loaf length is fixed: a recipe change of an inch or two means a new die.

Reorders on locked artwork may reduce proofing time because the structure and artwork are already approved, but standard production remains 10–14 business days after artwork approval unless otherwise confirmed.
