Sleeve, Wrap or Band: Which One You Need

These three get mixed up in briefs, and they are built differently. A sleeve is an open-ended tube, glued at one seam, that slides on over a closed box, tray or tin. It covers most of the faces and both ends stay open.

A wrap is a flat printed sheet folded around the product and closed on it with a tuck, sticker or tape, so it is applied rather than slid on. A band is a narrow strip around the middle that leaves most of the product showing; see custom belly bands product page for that format.

Choose a sleeve when the inner pack is plain, stays the same across several SKUs and needs a full printed face on shelf.

How Sleeve Length Is Calculated

A sleeve travels along the length of the inner pack and wraps around its width and height. The flat sheet therefore has to cover two widths, two heights and a glue flap.

Flat length = 2 x (W + H) + glue flap + fit allowance

• W and H: measured on the packed inner box or tray, including any lid lip, label or tray rim.
• Glue flap: about 0.5-0.6 in (around 15 mm), the strip that overlaps and is glued to close the tube.
• Fit allowance: typically about 1/32 in per panel, so the sleeve slides on without scuffing. We confirm it on a sample for each board.

The second dimension, sleeve depth, is how much of the box length the sleeve covers. It is a design choice: a short sleeve frames the middle of the pack, while a full-depth sleeve hides everything except the open ends.

Sleeve Length for Common Inner Packs

These are typical planning sizes worked from the formula above. Exact dimensions are set to your inner pack at quoting.

Heavier board adds to the inside measurement at every fold. A 24 pt sleeve is 0.024 in thick, so a stiff sleeve on a small box needs a little more allowance than a 14 pt one on the same box.

Sleeves Around Tins, Jars and Round Packs

A round pack has no width and height to add up, so the flat length comes from the circumference instead: pi x diameter, plus the glue flap and a little allowance. A 3 in diameter tin works out to about 9.4 in of circumference, so roughly 10 in of flat sleeve with the seam added.

Round sleeves have no scores, so the board has to curve evenly. Lighter cover weights and 14 pt board curve smoothly. Heavier board tends to show a flat spot at the seam, where two layers overlap and resist bending.

A round sleeve also has nothing to stop it rotating. Most are sized a touch tighter than a box sleeve, or the inner pack is given a slight shoulder or label edge for the sleeve to rest against.

Glue Seam Position and Overlap

The glue flap closes the tube and is the one spot where two layers of board sit on top of each other. Its position changes how the sleeve looks and how the artwork is laid out.

• Seam on the back panel: the most common choice. The front stays clean and the back carries copy, barcode and ingredients, kept clear of the overlap.
• Seam on a side panel: hides the seam on shelf, but the narrow side gives the glue less area to grip on a shallow pack.
• Seam at a fold: avoided, because the double layer resists folding and the edge lifts.

Sleeves are glued at the factory and folded flat on two scores, so they arrive ready to open and slide on. On some short digital runs, one end is closed with double-sided tape instead.

Board Choices for Sleeves

Board thickness is quoted in points (1 pt = 0.001 in) or as cover weight. Pick by how stiff the sleeve must stay and which finish it carries.

• 80-100 lb cover (roughly 215-270 gsm): light sleeves over rigid inner boxes, where the box gives the shape.
• 14 pt SBS (about 300 gsm): the standard retail sleeve, stiff enough to keep flat panels.
• 16-18 pt SBS: for larger sleeves and trays with a soft or uneven top.
• 24 pt SBS: for foil, embossing and photographic artwork on gift sleeves.
• Kraft board: a natural brown face; white ink or a coated kraft keeps colors readable.

Windows, Inside Print and Finishes

A die-cut window shows the product or the inner pack's own print through the sleeve. Keep a window at least a board's width clear of any score so the panel stays stiff.

Inside print puts a message or pattern on the reverse of the sheet, visible when the sleeve comes off. Outer finishes include matte or gloss aqueous coating, soft-touch lamination, spot UV and foil stamping. The finish catalog of custom boxes blog explains each finish.

Who Orders Sleeves

• Tea and coffee brands: one plain inner box with a different sleeve for each blend.
• Apparel multipacks: sleeves over folded shirts or socks on a backing card or in a tray.
• Gift sets: a printed sleeve over a tray holding several items.
• Prepared meal and snack trays: a printed sleeve over a sealed tray; food-contact-appropriate materials can be specified where required.
• Subscription and seasonal programs: a new sleeve each cycle while the inner box stays the same.

Mistakes to Avoid With Sleeve Sizing

• Measuring the empty box: a filled tray can bulge, and lids or rims add height. Measure a packed unit.
• No fit allowance: a sleeve sized to the exact perimeter scuffs the print as it is slid on, or will not go on at all.
• Too much allowance: a loose sleeve rotates and slides off the pack in transit.
• Artwork across the glue flap: anything printed on the overlap is hidden or doubled.
• Ignoring board thickness: switching from 14 pt to 24 pt without resizing makes the fit tighter.

MOQ starts from 100 sleeves on standard sizes in 14 pt board. Foil, windows, inside print and heavier boards may raise the floor, and we confirm it at quote.

Send the inner pack's length, width and height, how much of its length the sleeve should cover, where you want the seam and your quantity. We return a flat dieline with the glue flap, scores and any window marked. Standard production runs 10–14 business days after artwork approval. Reorders on locked artwork may reduce proofing time because the structure and artwork are already approved, but standard production remains 10–14 business days after artwork approval unless otherwise confirmed.
