What Makes a Box a Tab Lock Box

A tab lock box closes with a die-cut tab on one flap that pushes into a matching slot on another panel. Once the tab is in, friction and the shape of the cut hold it there, so the box stays closed without tape, glue, or a sticker. Pull the tab back out and the box opens again.

The term gets used loosely. Some buyers say tab lock when they mean a plain tuck end, which closes by friction alone. Others mean a mailer with locking ears on the front. Before quoting, we confirm which panel carries the tab, where the slot sits, and what holds the bottom, because those three choices decide how the box behaves with your product inside.

A tab lock usually closes the top or front. The bottom needs its own closure, and that is where product weight matters most.

Converters disagree on whether the crash-lock or the 1-2-3 bottom is stronger, and the answer depends on board and size, so we do not rank them. What is consistent: both carry more weight than a tuck end, the crash-lock packs faster but costs more because it needs gluing, and the 1-2-3 costs less to make but takes longer to fold. Some converters set a minimum of about 25 mm on length and width for crash-lock bottoms. Every style here ships and stores flat.

Board and Flute Choices

How firmly a tab holds depends on the stiffness of the board around the slot. A thin, soft board lets the tab slip out; a thick or heavily laminated board makes the tab hard to insert and can crack it at the fold.

Getting the Tab and Slot to Fit

• Slot width follows caliper: the slot must allow for the full board thickness, plus any lamination.
• Coatings change friction: laminated or varnished board slides more easily, so the lock may need a deeper tab or a barbed shape.
• Grain direction matters: a tab folded across the grain holds its shape better than one folded along it.
• Repeated opening wears the lock: each cycle softens the fold, so a box meant for many openings needs a heavier board.

Measuring for a Tab Lock Box

Quote dimensions as inside length x width x depth, measured from the product plus any insert. Length is the longer side of the opening, width the shorter side, and depth runs from opening to base. The tab sits inside the closed outline, so it does not add to the outer size, but the slot panel needs enough depth for the tab to engage fully. On very shallow boxes, a front-locking tab may suit better than a top-locking one. If the product has a loose part or an accessory, measure it packed the way it will ship.

Inserts, Closures, and Finishes

• Dust flaps close the side gaps on carton tops and help the tab panel sit flat.
• Thumb notch on the opening edge makes the tab easier to release.
• Corrugated or paperboard inserts stop the product shifting against the closure from inside.
• Hang tab for retail cartons sold on pegs.
• Tamper-evident seal label across the closure when the buyer needs to see the box has not been opened; a tab lock alone shows no sign of opening.

Printing

Digital printing suits short runs and multiple designs. Offset litho on SBS, or litho-laminated sheets on corrugated, suits longer runs and tight color. Flexographic printing direct on corrugated suits simpler artwork at higher volume. Artwork can run across the closure, but keep small type off the tab itself, because it is the most handled part of the box.

• A heavy product on a tab-only bottom: use a 1-2-3 or crash-lock bottom when weight sits on the base.
• No test shipment: pack your heaviest item and send it through your real carrier before the full run.
• Ignoring grain direction: a tab folded along the grain can lose shape quickly.
• Expecting tamper evidence from the lock: add a seal label if you need proof the box was not opened.
