Start With the Item, Not the Box

Most gift box problems start when the format is chosen before anyone measures what goes in it. A shirt, a boxed pen set and a bottle need three different structures. Measure the item first, then decide how the recipient should open it.

Write down three numbers before you ask for a quote: the item's length, width and height as it will sit in the box (folded, stacked or in its own sleeve), its weight, and whether it is fragile. Those three facts decide the format, the board and the clearance.

Matching Gift Box Formats to What You Are Giving

Each format below solves a different packing problem. The right one depends on shape and weight more than on the occasion.

• Telescope lid and base: a separate lid slides down over the base, either full depth or partway. It suits folded apparel, footwear, hamper contents and irregular items, and is usually the simplest rigid build.
• Drawer (sleeve and tray): a tray slides out of an outer sleeve. Best for small multi-piece sets such as stationery, medals, small awards and corporate desk sets, held in a fitted insert. Not a good choice for large or heavy contents.
• Magnetic book-style: a hinged lid closes on concealed magnets. Works for flat or shallow sets, electronics accessories and card or board games. Tall or bulky items fight the hinge, so they are a poor fit.
• Shoulder neck: an inner collar sits between base and lid. Used for bottles, fragrance and collectibles where a snug, upright fit matters.
• Collapsible rigid: ships flat and snaps into shape on magnets. Useful when the gift box is posted or stored before packing.
• Folding carton: printed paperboard that ships and stores flat. The practical route for large event runs, favors and giveaways.

Planning Sizes for Common Gifts

These are typical planning sizes, not fixed stock sizes. Final dimensions are set to your item at quoting.

• Folded shirt or blouse: around 14.5 x 9.5 x 2 in is a common apparel gift size. A thick knit sweater needs more depth than that.
• Robe or bulky knitwear: around 17 x 11 x 2.4 in gives room for a heavier fold.
• Small sets and favors: small favor formats run from roughly 2 to 4 in per side, depending on what goes in.
• Handle-top gift cartons: planning sizes of about 12 x 8 x 6 cm, 18 x 12 x 9 cm and 25 x 18 x 12 cm cover small, medium and large fills.

For apparel, make the inside depth at least 1 cm (about 0.4 in) deeper than the folded stack so the lid closes without crushing the fold.

How Much Clearance to Leave Around a Gift

Always size from the interior. Board thickness and magnets take up space, so an outside measurement will mislead you. Never size to an exact fit.

• Solid, non-fragile items: a few millimetres per side.
• Clothing and books: about 0.5 to 1 cm per side.
• Tissue or crinkle fill: about 1 to 2 cm per side.
• Fragile glass or ceramic: at least 2 to 3 cm per side, with an insert.
• Heavy cushioning: 2 to 5 cm per side.

Board and Insert Choices

Rigid gift boxes are built from grey board, usually 1.5 to 3 mm thick, wrapped in printed paper. For how that board is built and wrapped, see the rigid boxes style page. Folding gift cartons commonly run 300 to 400 gsm paperboard, with 350 gsm a frequent middle choice.

Inserts keep a set from shifting in transit. Options include paperboard cut-outs, corrugated dividers, molded pulp and foam. Pick the insert by item weight and fragility, then size the box around the insert, not the other way round.

Choosing Between Rigid and Folding Gift Boxes

Rigid boxes ship assembled, so a large run takes up a lot of freight and storage volume. Folding cartons and collapsible rigid boxes ship flat and set up at the packing table. For a 500-piece corporate send, that difference can matter more than the finish.

• Keepsake gift kept on a shelf: rigid telescope, drawer or magnetic.
• Gift posted to the recipient: a mailer boxes style page or a collapsible rigid box.
• High-count event giveaway: folding carton or a gable boxes style page.

Printing, Finishes and Small Runs

Artwork can carry a logo, a message panel or a recipient name. Finishes such as foil stamping, embossing and soft-touch lamination are optional and should be chosen to suit the board. One design can run across several sizes, but each size is its own structure and cutting die.
