Velvet Is a Surface, Not a Box Style

A velvet box is a rigid greyboard shell with a velvet surface glued over it, inside, outside or both. The shell gives the structure. The velvet gives the look and the feel. Almost any jewelry box style can be finished in velvet, so the real decisions are which velvet surface to use, where to put it, and how to brand a surface that does not take ink the way paper does.

We build in three layers: the board shell, the velvet surface, and the insert that holds the piece. Each layer has its own trade-offs, set out below.

Fabric Velvet, Flocked Paper or Flocked Foam

Three materials are sold as velvet in box making. They look similar in a photo and behave differently in the hand and on the line.

Many boxes mix them: flocked paper outside for clean corners, flocked foam inside where the jewelry sits, and fabric velvet kept for a lid panel or a small run where the feel is the selling point.

Nap Direction and Colour Shading

Velvet has a direction. Brush the pile one way and it looks lighter and smoother; brush it the other way and it looks darker and richer. Two panels cut in different directions can look like two different colours side by side, even from the same roll.

On a box, that means every panel on a visible face should be cut the same way, and the lid and base should match. We agree the direction with you at sampling, so the face you prefer, the lighter smooth one or the darker rich one, is the face seen from the front of the box on the counter. Wrapped edges and corners are folded so the nap does not reverse where two panels meet. We mark nap direction on the cutting layout. If you are matching a brand colour, approve a physical sample rather than a screen swatch, and expect small shade differences between dye lots on reorders.

Typical Planning Sizes by Piece

Velvet wrap adds a little thickness to every wall, roughly 0.3 to 0.5 mm per layer, so outer dimensions carry a tolerance of about plus or minus 1 mm. The sizes below are typical planning sizes only; final dimensions are set to your jewelry and insert at quoting.

Velvet Box Styles and Construction

• Clamshell or flip-top: a hinged lid that stays attached; the most familiar velvet format.
• Two-piece lid and base: a telescoping lid over a velvet base; clean and sturdy for pendants and sets.
• Slide-out drawer: a velvet tray in a velvet or printed sleeve; slim and quick to restock.
• Magnetic rigid box: a flat lid with concealed magnets; choose it for the presentation, not as a default upgrade, since magnets add cost and assembly.
• Book-style: opens like a book to a flocked interior; suits matched necklace and earring sets.
• Pillow box: a shallow box with a removable covered pillow for watches, cuffs and wide bracelets.

Interior Only, Exterior Only, or Full Velvet

Velvet does not have to cover the whole box. A paper exterior with a velvet interior gives a printable outside and a soft reveal, and it ships with fewer handling marks. A velvet exterior with a satin or paper lid liner puts the tactile surface where the hand lands. A velvet lid panel set into a paper box gives a velvet accent at lower cost. Full velvet inside and out is the most traditional look and the most sensitive to handling. Whichever layout you choose, pick the interior shade against the metal it will hold, darker flock behind silver and white gold and a lighter shade behind yellow or rose gold, and check it on a physical sample.

Branding on Velvet

Ink does not sit well on a pile surface, and hot foil on a deep nap can give patchy coverage because the fibres stand up unevenly. Branding usually goes onto a flatter surface instead:

• Foil or deboss on a paper or leatherette lid panel set into the velvet.
• Printed sleeve or belly band around a velvet box, carrying full-colour artwork.
• Printed satin or paper liner inside the lid, read every time the box opens.
• Applied metal plate engraved or printed with the logo.
• Blind deboss on short-nap flocked paper, tested on a sample first.

Handling, Lint and Care

Velvet surfaces mark under pressure. Stacking heavy cartons directly on finished boxes, or packing them face to face, can flatten the pile. We sleeve finished boxes individually and add edge protection in the outer carton. Flocked foam inserts can release a little lint where they are cut; a light pass with a lint roller or a soft brush in the direction of the nap clears it, and the same brush lifts minor crush marks. Keep boxes away from damp storage, which can leave water marks on the pile.

Display or Shipping First

A counter box can put the velvet on the outside and rely on careful handling. A box that ships in a mailer needs a firmer shell, an insert that grips the piece through courier handling, and an outer carton with cushioning. Mistakes to Avoid With Velvet Boxes

• Printing full colour onto the pile. Put the artwork on a sleeve or panel instead.
• Expecting an exact colour match across lots. Approve a physical sample and allow for small shade shifts on reorders.
• Ignoring nap direction. Mixed directions read as mismatched colours.
• Foil straight onto a high pile. Coverage is uneven; use a smooth panel.
• One insert for every piece. A ring, a chain and a set each need their own cut.
• Velvet outside on a mail-only program. Handling marks show; consider a velvet interior with a paper exterior.
