Wound Paperboard Wall

The body is spiral-wound or convolute-wound from one or more plies of paperboard into a seamless, rigid cylinder. More plies or a heavier caliper give a thicker, stiffer wall, and the round shape spreads pressure around the whole circumference, which is why a tube resists crushing well for its weight.

Metal End Caps

Pressed metal caps push-fit onto each end for a firm closure and a clean rim. They give the most protection at the top and bottom and suit a heavier pillar or jar candle, with a little added cost.

Paperboard End Caps

Fitting the Tube to the Candle

The single most important measurement is the candle diameter. The tube inner diameter is matched to the candle outer diameter with a small clearance, so the candle drops in by hand but does not rattle. A pillar, a jar, and a votive each have their own diameter, so the tube is sized to the vessel you actually pack. When the fit is loose, a thin foam or paperboard liner takes up the gap and keeps the candle centered. Candle Tube Sizes

Tubes are sized by the candle diameter, which sets the inner diameter, and the candle height, which sets the length. Materials and Trade-Offs

Black-dyed or black-wrapped paperboard gives the solid black surface the product is named for, while natural kraft reads as a plainer, recyclable-leaning base. Metal caps add the firmest closure for heavier candles, and paperboard caps keep the build all-paper and lighter for smaller ones. Standard CMYK ink reads dark on dark, so a black tube is usually decorated with foil stamping, spot UV, screen-printed white or metallic inks, or embossing that sits on top of the color rather than printing into it. The tube is also a labeling surface. Leave print and label area for burn instructions, fire-safety symbols, the fragrance and wax description, and a barcode. That safety copy belongs to the candle and its maker; the tube provides the labeling surface and does not itself make the candle fire-safe.
