Cake Box Materials: Corrugated, SBS & Kraft Compared
Cake box materials shape sidewall stiffness, transport stability, and brand presentation at the counter. This guide compares corrugated cake boxes, SBS cake box stock, and kraft cake boxes for bakery and catering buyers, with board weight guidance and structural pairings for round, sheet, and tiered cake programs.

Our content helps businesses compare packaging options, prepare accurate quote requests, and choose boxes that fit their product, budget, and shipping or retail needs.
Cake box materials shape how a cake travels — sidewall stiffness, transport stability, presentation at the counter, and how the box feels in a customer's hand. Most cake box material questions we field on custom cake boxes orders come from buyers picking between corrugated, solid bleached sulphate board, and kraft, and trying to match that choice to delivery method and brand presentation. The right cake box for transport depends on distance, decoration, and delivery vehicle, not just the material on its own.
This guide walks bakery and catering buyers through the three main cake box materials we print on, what each one is best suited to, and how cake box board weight and structural choices change the transport story. Sizing and decoration interact with material choice, so treat the guidance below as a starting point that gets refined during quoting at The Printing World.
Who Orders Cake Boxes by Material
Material decisions matter most to independent bakeries, wedding cake studios, grocery in-store bakery teams, hotel pastry programs, dessert delivery brands, corporate catering companies, cafe chains, and online cake gifting brands. Independent bakeries tend to weigh shelf presentation against transport stiffness because the same SKU travels in a car for one customer and ships across town for another. Wedding studios care most about sidewall stiffness during a long van drive to a venue. Grocery in-store teams care about how fast the box assembles on a high-volume line and how it stacks against the next box on the shelf. Hotel pastry teams pick presentation board for room service or banquet trays. Online cake gifting brands care about shipping board because every parcel sees a courier sort facility.
Box Styles for Cake Materials
Material pairs with structural style. Two-piece telescoping boxes work in either SBS or corrugated stock and give a lift-off lid for counter presentation. One-piece auto-lock bottoms are usually run in SBS or kraft cardstock. Tall four-corner trays with separate lids for tiered cakes typically benefit from corrugated or double-wall cake box construction. Window lids tend to land on SBS for the cleaner print finish; solid lids work in any material. We map material to style during quoting.
Corrugated Cake Boxes
Corrugated cake boxes are the workhorse for transport-heavy cake programs. The fluted center layer gives sidewall stiffness that protects buttercream sides during van delivery. We usually spec single-wall E-flute or B-flute for single-layer cakes and double-wall corrugation for tiered wedding cakes that travel longer distances. Wedding cake box material spec on these runs almost always lands on double-wall cake box construction or heavy corrugated cake box construction. Corrugated cake box sidewalls resist crushing from stacked deliveries better than flat board.
The trade-off is print finish. Corrugated stock has a slightly more textured surface than coated board, so very fine type and photographic imagery can lose a touch of crispness. For bakeries that prioritize transport stability over magazine-quality print, corrugated is the right call. Look at our corrugated cake boxes for buyer examples.
SBS Board Cake Boxes
SBS cake boxes use solid bleached sulphate paperboard, a coated white stock that gives a crisp surface for offset and digital printing. We see SBS chosen most often by retail-focused bakeries that want a clean white background, sharp color reproduction, and a smooth tactile feel. Common cake box board weight in SBS ranges from 18 point through 24 point depending on box size and transport needs.
SBS sidewalls are not as crush-resistant as corrugated, so a tall stacked-layer cake or a tiered wedding cake material spec usually moves up to corrugated. For single-layer round and square cakes traveling short distances, SBS gives a presentation result that customers tend to keep for a few days. SBS cake box stock is also the go-to choice for window-cutout lids.
Kraft Cake Boxes
Kraft cake boxes use unbleached brown paperboard for an earthy, rustic look that fits artisan bakeries, farmers market sellers, and natural-food positioning. Kraft cake box stock is mechanically similar to SBS in stiffness but takes ink differently — dark inks reproduce well on the brown base, while light pastel colors look muted. Many of our kraft customers stick to one or two ink colors for a clean look.
Kraft is often spec'd for single-layer round cakes, cupcake box material runs, and mini-cake boxes where the rustic look is part of the brand promise. For tiered wedding cakes or shipped cakes, most bakeries move to corrugated instead so the structural margin is bigger.
Cake Box Board Weight
Board weight is usually expressed in points (1 point = 0.001 inch) for SBS and kraft, and as wall count for corrugated. A 16 point SBS feels paper-thin and is best for cupcake boxes or very small cake boxes. 18 point handles most single-layer 8 to 10 inch cake boxes. 24 point gives a sturdier feel for larger sheet cakes or longer delivery distances.
For corrugated, single-wall E-flute is good for small to mid-size cakes; B-flute steps up sidewall stiffness; double-wall cake box construction is the choice for tiered wedding cakes, sheet cakes traveling by van, and stacked shipping cartons. Tell us cake board diameter, total assembled height, and the delivery method during quoting and we will recommend a board weight that suits.
Liners and Direct Contact
Cake boxes are usually used with a separate cake board or drum, so the box surface itself does not always touch the cake. When direct contact is part of the program, we spec coatings and inner liners that may be food-contact-appropriate depending on material, coating, and intended contact duration. Confirm direct-contact requirements with us during quoting so we can recommend the right inside surface — uncoated kraft, coated SBS, or a separate inner liner. See our bakery packaging category for examples of cake, cupcake, and dessert lines that share artwork.
Window lids use a clear film insert sized to the cutout. Film selection may vary depending on whether the window is purely visual or sits close to decoration; we will spec the film to suit during artwork review.
Sustainability and Recyclability
Most cake box materials we print may be accepted by standard paper recycling streams, though acceptance depends on local recycling infrastructure and how the box was coated. Uncoated kraft and lightly coated SBS tend to recycle in most municipal programs. Heavy varnishes, foil stamping, or laminated film windows can affect recyclability and may need separating before disposal. FSC-certified board stock is available for buyers running certified programs, subject to availability at the time of quoting.
Common Cake Box Materials Businesses’ Mistakes
Choosing SBS for a tiered wedding cake traveling by van — double-wall cake box construction in corrugated is sturdier for that load.
Picking kraft when the brand uses pastel color artwork — the brown base mutes light inks.
Specifying 16 point SBS for a 10 inch sheet cake — the sidewalls flex during transport.
Assuming all coated SBS suits direct contact without confirming the coating with the supplier.
Using laminated film windows without checking recyclability acceptance in the brand's target market.
Order Custom Cake Boxes by Material
We stock and print custom printed cake boxes in corrugated cake boxes, SBS cake box stock, and kraft cake boxes across the most common board weights. Production runs 10–14 business days after artwork approval. Tell us your cake board size, tier count, total assembled height, decoration clearance, delivery method, window or solid lid preference, and target quantity, and we will recommend a material, board weight, and structural style in one response. Email sales@theprintingworld.com to start a material review.
