The Longest, Finest Chain in the Jewelry Range

An anklet is usually 9 to 10 inches of thin chain, sometimes with a charm and an adjustable end. That is longer than any wrist piece, yet it weighs very little. So the packaging question is less about strength and more about space: does the chain hang on a card, coil in a small box, or lie out in a long tray?

Many anklets never see a box at all. Beach shops and resort counters often sell them on a printed backer card hung from a peg. Gift sellers and online brands lean toward a small box. This page covers both, with sizes for each.

Anklet Lengths and the Space Each Needs

Published size guides agree on 9 to 10 inches (23 to 25 cm) as the typical adult length, with larger sizes reaching 11 inches (about 28 cm). Most brands add half an inch to an inch to the ankle measurement: about 0.5 in for snug, 0.75 in for comfortable and 1 in for loose. A common 8 x 2 x 1 in stock cotton box is listed for anklets, but a 9 to 10 inch chain only fits it coiled or doubled back. For a flat display, the tray has to run 10 inches or more, which is an unusual shape for a jewelry box. That is why most anklet boxes are small squares with the chain coiled.

Card, Hang Tag or Box

The format choice comes first, because it changes the board, the size and the price per piece.

Setting up a backer card

Fine chain threads through two small slits, roughly 0.25 in long, and the clasp sits at the back. Place the hang hole about 0.25 in below the top edge and centred, or use a Euro-slot about 1 in wide for standard peg hooks. A 12 pt card can sag on a peg when a charm hangs from it, so 16 pt is a safer floor. Board GSM equivalents vary by mill, so specify the card in pt.

A card leaves the chain exposed. If the piece is sold as a gift or shipped to a customer, a small box or a card inside a sleeve protects it better.

Box Styles That Work for Anklets

• Rigid two-piece box: a wrapped chipboard base and lift-off lid with the chain coiled on a pad. The counter and gifting choice.
• Folded paperboard carton: a tuck or two-piece folding box that ships flat and keeps cost down on large resort and seasonal runs.
• Clamshell: a hinged box that opens flat, useful when a charm anklet should be shown laid out.
• Slim sleeve and tray: a low drawer for a delicate chain, where a shallow profile suits the piece.

Coil, Slit or Lay Flat

Fine chain tangles when it can move. The insert has to stop that.

• Notched pad: a foam or card pad with a slit that holds the clasp. The chain runs across the pad and around.
• Coil pad: a raised round pad the chain wraps around once, which suits 10 to 11 inch lengths in a small square.
• Cotton fill: the cheapest option; the chain sits in a loose coil. Fine for low-cost pieces, less tidy on opening.
• Insert card: the backer card itself placed inside the box, which keeps one format for peg display and gifting.

Extenders and Charms

Many chain anklets close with a lobster clasp onto an extension chain, so they adjust by a few centimetres. Size the coil or card around the fully extended chain, and tuck the extender behind the pad so it does not tangle with the main length. Extender lengths vary by maker, so send yours with the spec.

Charms and beads add depth rather than length. Measure the tallest charm and add a few millimetres to the interior depth so the lid does not press it.

Board Choices: Thin SBS, Kraft and Rigid

Because an anklet is light, thin board does the job for most programs. SBS in the 16 to 24 pt range (0.016 to 0.024 in) prints bright full-colour art and folds into small cartons; 18 pt is a common general box grade and 24 pt is stiffer for larger boxes or heavier charms. Kraft gives a natural, handmade look, but brown board makes colours print duller, so white ink or foil often stands out better on it. Rigid chipboard with a paper wrap suits fine-metal anklets sold at the counter.

Recyclability depends on the board, the coating and any foam insert, so a plain folded carton is generally easier to recycle where facilities accept it than a foil-wrapped rigid box. Board options are listed in the packaging materials catalog.

Beach, Resort, Indie and Gift-Set Programs

Resort and coastal shops often sell anklets in high volume at impulse prices, so a backer card or a simple folded carton keeps cost per piece in reach. Indie and handmade makers running short batches use kraft cartons or cards with one or two spot colours. Fine jewelers selling gold or silver anklets want a rigid box with a coil pad. Gift sets pair an anklet with a matching bracelet or toe ring, which needs a two-zone insert. Online sellers need the chain held still in transit, so a notched pad matters more than the outer finish.

What to Print on Card Faces and Box Lids

On a 2.5 x 3.5 in card, the face carries the logo and the back carries size, material and care text. On a small box, the lid carries the brand. Mistakes to Avoid With Anklet Packaging

• Using a bracelet box: a 7 inch wrist size is too short for a 9 to 10 inch anklet laid flat.
• Forgetting the extender: size to the fully extended chain, not the nominal length.
• Card too thin: 12 pt card can curl or sag on a peg; 16 pt or heavier holds better.
• Hang hole too close to the edge: keep about 0.25 in of board above the hole.
• No room for a charm: charms need depth; measure the tallest one.
• Kraft for bright art: brown board mutes vivid colour. Use SBS or a white wrap.
• Rigid boxes on a volume resort run: a folded carton or card usually does the job at lower cost.
