A Bracelet Is a Strand With Two Ends

Unlike a closed hoop, a chain or link bracelet is flexible. It can lie straight, curl into a loop or slump into a pile, and it has a clasp at one end that is usually the heaviest and thickest part. The box has to decide two things: how the strand lies, and where the clasp lands.

That makes bracelet packaging a length problem. A 6.5 inch piece and an 8.5 inch piece can share a box if the strand is coiled, but not if it is laid out flat. The sections below work through lengths, clasps, insert styles and the bracelet types that need special handling.

Bracelet Lengths and the Footprint Each One Needs

Retail bracelet lengths cluster between 6 and 8.5 inches. Most brands add about half an inch to the wrist measurement for a comfortable fit, and 6.5 to 7 inches is the most common women's size across published charts. The tray and square columns below are typical planning sizes; exact interiors are set to your piece and clasp at quoting.

Stock cotton-filled boxes give useful reference points: 8 x 2 x 1 in is sold for long flat strands, and 3.5 x 3.5 x 0.87 in for coiled pieces. A flat 8 x 2 tray fits a medium bracelet with its clasp, while a 7 inch chain coils comfortably in a 3.5 inch square if the links are fine.

Where the Clasp Sits

The clasp decides insert depth. A slim lobster clasp tucks under a pad; a toggle bar does not. Here is how common clasps change the build.

A good rule for display is to put the clasp at the back or underneath, so the face of the bracelet is what the buyer sees first.

Flat Pad, Pillow or Cotton Fill

Three insert styles cover most bracelet programs, and the choice depends on the piece more than the box.

• Pillow or bar-and-pad: a soft cushion the bracelet wraps around, clasp underneath. It shows the full circle the way it is worn and suits chain, link and watch-style bracelets.
• Flat pad with two slits: the strand runs across the pad and both ends tuck through. It keeps the bracelet straight and is the tidiest choice for a long flat tray.
• Cotton fill: a loose cotton layer the bracelet rests on. It is the least expensive and lets chain settle, but the piece can shift, and fibres may cling to dark or textured beads.

Pillow inserts are usually the right default for gifting. Slit pads suit online orders where the strand must stay put through a mailer.

Charm, Tennis, Beaded and Leather Bracelets

Charm bracelets

Dangling charms add height and knock against each other. Plan interior depth as the tallest charm plus 4 to 6 mm, and use a pillow so the charms hang to the sides rather than piling up.

Tennis bracelets

A tennis line is stiff from end to end, closes with a box clasp and carries the stones on one face. It wants a flat, firm insert, stones facing up, and usually a rigid box rather than a folding carton.

Beaded stretch bracelets

Elastic cord can take a set if it is folded tight or stretched over a too-large pillow. Lay it in a loose circle on a flat pad, or size the pillow to the bracelet's relaxed circumference.

Leather and cord bracelets

These hold a curve and spring back. A shallow round recess or a small pillow keeps them from flattening into a kink.

One Box for Three Lengths

Many brands sell the same design in small, medium and large. Rather than three boxes, size one flat tray to the longest length plus the clasp and use slits placed for the shortest, or coil every length in one square box. A coiled format is the easier way to cover 6.5 to 8 inches with one footprint. Print or sticker the size on the base or end panel so stock can be picked without opening boxes.

Board and Build for a Light Piece

Most chain bracelets weigh little, so folding paperboard is often enough. An 18 pt SBS carton (about 0.018 in caliper) prints clean colour and holds its shape for a single bracelet. Use 24 pt where the box is longer, such as a 9 inch flat tray, since a long narrow panel bows more easily. GSM equivalents vary by mill, so quote in pt.

Combo Boxes: Bracelet With Earrings or a Watch

A matched bracelet and earring set fits a two-zone insert: a pillow or slit section for the strand and a small card or slotted section for the earrings. A 3.5 x 3.5 in coiled box can carry both if the earrings are studs. Larger sets move to a 5.5 x 3.5 in footprint. Watch-style pieces sit better on an oval pillow than on a flat pad.

Logo Placement on a Long Lid

Long trays give you a long lid, which suits a centred logo or a wordmark that runs the length. CMYK prints on SBS or paper wrap; kraft works with one or two spot colours. Foil, embossing and soft-touch lamination are optional, picked for the look. See box finishing options for details.

Mistakes to Avoid With Bracelet Boxes

• Sizing to the nominal length: a 7 inch bracelet with an extender is longer than 7 inches laid flat. Size to the extended length or coil it.
• Ignoring charm height: charms need depth, not a longer box.
• One insert for beaded and chain lines: a slit pad that suits fine chain can crease elastic.
• Lid pressing on the clasp: toggles and box clasps are the thickest point; check lid clearance there.
• Magnetic clasp in a magnetic box: the clasp can stick to the flap and pull the piece out of place.
