What "Cardboard" Means in a Jewelry Box

Buyers use "cardboard" for three quite different boards. Folding paperboard is a single thin sheet, such as SBS or kraft, scored and folded into a carton. Rigid chipboard is a thick, dense board wrapped in printed paper and set up into a box that does not fold flat. Corrugated board has a fluted middle layer and is mostly used for outer shippers and mailers.

Paperboard thickness is quoted in points (pt). One point is 0.001 inch, or 0.0254 mm, so 18 pt board is 0.018 in thick. Mills also quote weight in GSM (grams per square metre), but the conversion depends on the fibre and coating, and published charts disagree: one supplier lists 16 pt at about 300 GSM, another at about 350. Treat every GSM figure below as approximate and specify jewelry boxes in pt. Caliper tolerance of around plus or minus 5% is normal.

For most folding jewelry boxes, 18 pt is a sound starting point. Move to 24 pt when the box is longer than about 5 inches, carries heavier metal, or has a separate lid that needs to sit square.

One point causes confusion: kraft describes how the pulp is made, not whether it contains recycled fibre. A brown box is not automatically recycled board. If recycled content matters to your brand, ask for mill documentation for the specific board.

Folded Paperboard vs Rigid Chipboard

Rigid chipboard runs from roughly 800 to 2000 GSM, with around 1200 to 1500 GSM commonly used for jewelry-weight boxes, and the heaviest grades reach about 2 to 3 mm thick. Duplex chipboard has a white clay-coated top and a grey back. The board is then wrapped in art paper, kraft, textured, metallic or SBS sheets.

Compared with that, a folding paperboard box is far lighter and ships flat, which saves storage space and postage on volume programs. Rigid gives a heavier feel in the hand and holds up better to stacking. Construction Options in Paperboard

• Tuck-top carton: one folded piece with a tuck flap. Ships flat, assembles by hand quickly, lowest cost.
• Two-piece lid and base: two folded trays, the lid slightly larger. A cleaner counter reveal while staying light.
• Drawer and sleeve: a folded tray inside a printed sleeve. Good for a printed outer and a plain inner.
• Mailer-style folding box: a self-locking box with a fold-over lid, often used inside a poly or paper outer for online orders.

Stock cotton-filled boxes come in widely sold footprints such as 3.5 x 3.5 x 0.87, 5.5 x 3.5 x 1, 5 7/16 x 3.5 x 1 and 8 x 2 x 1 inches. Matching the Board to the Program

Costume and fashion jewelry brands usually run 18 pt SBS tuck or two-piece boxes, because cost per unit and full-colour branding matter more than heft. Subscription accessory programs ship a box every month, so they favour mailer-style folding boxes that stack flat and assemble fast. Gift-with-purchase and seasonal sets often use a printed sleeve over a plain kraft tray, changing only the sleeve each season. Indie makers selling at markets lean toward kraft with a one-colour stamp-style logo. Retail counters selling everyday pieces choose two-piece SBS for a cleaner lift-off reveal.

Cotton Fill, Foam or Paper Inserts

Cotton fill is the classic paperboard jewelry box interior: low cost and soft, but a heavy stone can shift in it. Foam pads, flat or slotted, hold pieces in place and suit shipping. Paper and card inserts, folded from the same board, keep the whole box in one material family, which can make disposal simpler for the end customer. Choose by the weight of the piece and whether the box travels.

Will a Paperboard Jewelry Box Survive Shipping?

On its own, a folding carton is a presentation box, not a shipper. It protects the piece from scratches and minor knocks but can crush under parcel loads. For online orders, place it in a padded mailer or an E-flute corrugated outer. Humidity also matters: paperboard and corrugated lose stiffness in damp conditions, so store cartons dry and avoid packing them in warm, humid rooms.

Recycled Content and Recyclability: How to Word It

Recycled-content board can be specified where available; ask for documentation of the actual percentage, and qualify any claim on pack if the content is less than 100%. Recyclability depends on local facilities and on what has been added to the board. Heavy laminations, metallic films and glued-in foam can make a box harder to recycle. A plain printed carton with an aqueous coating and a paper insert is generally simpler for the end customer to place in paper recycling where it is accepted. FSC-certified board may be available depending on the mill at the time of order.

Printing and Finishing on Paperboard

Offset and digital CMYK both run well on SBS. On kraft, one- or two-colour printing and white ink give the cleanest result. Foil stamping and embossing work on 18 to 24 pt board; thinner board can show the emboss through to the inside. Matte or gloss lamination adds scuff resistance but affects recyclability, so weigh it against your messaging. See box finishing options for details.

Mistakes to Avoid With Paperboard Jewelry Boxes

• 12 pt for a full box: it is a card grade; boxes bow and lids will not sit square.
• Assuming kraft means recycled: ask for documentation before printing a claim.
• Comparing quotes in GSM: conversions vary, so compare caliper in pt.
• Shipping the carton naked: use an outer mailer for parcel delivery.
• Laminating a box you call recyclable: heavy films complicate the claim.
• Storing flats in a damp space: board absorbs moisture and loses stiffness.
